Food Crisis Looms in Northern Mali Amid Water Scarcity, Says Oxfam

Water scarcity in northern Mali is threatening the region’s food production and livestock, according to Oxfam.  “This is the third consecutive year with insufficient rains,” said Wanalher Ag Alwaly, a food security expert from Oxfam’s local partner, Tassaght. “The severity and this current alarming situation are mainly due to past climate stress which is culminating this year.”The government has pledged to provide 7,000 tons of food to communities hit hardest by the food crisis, but no food aid has so far reached the people, according to Oxfam.
