The Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization’s board has chosen Dagfinn Hoybraten, a former health minister and current member of parliament in Norway, as its new chairman.
Hoybraten will succeed Mary Robinson, who will conclude her term at the end of December.
Hoybraten’s tenure as board chair coincides with the adoption of GAVI’s new five-year strategy, which focuses on introducing lifesaving vaccines against pneumonia and diarrhea. The two diseases are the biggest killers of children under 5 in the developing world.
In June 2011, GAVI will hold a pledging conference to mobilize funding for its USD3.7 billion, five-year strategy.
