Germany’s cabinet Sept. 19 agreed to extend the deployment of its roughly 3,000 troops and six Tornado reconnaissance jets in Afghanistan for another year. Government spokesman Ulrich Wilhelm said ministers had agreed to renew the mandate for up to 3,500 soldiers to participate in NATO’s 40,000-strong International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) until Oct. 2008. Parliament will vote on the extension in coming weeks and is expected to approve it, although opposition will be substantial. (Reuters)
