Three well-known charity groups are leading a global initiative to gather leaders in international development and philanthropy, and come up with innovative solutions to the world’s greatest development challenges.
The Rockefeller Foundation, Institute of Development Studies and the Resource Alliance launched the Bellagio Initiative, a series of global consultations on such topics as climate change, emerging markets, sustainability and migration. The initiative’s output is expected to feed into the debate at a high-level summit that will be held at the Rockefeller Foundation Bellagio Centre, Italy, on Nov. 8-22, 2011. The summit will bring together the world’s best thinkers and practitioners in philanthropy and development to explore joint solutions to poverty.
The initiative acknowledges the important role that philanthropic giving plays in fighting poverty worldwide, having more than doubled over the past decade. Organization of Economic Cooperation and Development data show that private giving stood at $22 billion in 2009.
The Bellagio Initiative is expected to produce a map of the philanthropic sector and a framework for action that will focus on building partnerships across regions and sectors for the promotion of human well-being.
