Haiti Asks for Direct Aid From Canada

Instead of tapping aid organizations in the field, the Haitian government is seeking direct financial assistance from Canada, Canadian International Cooperation Minister Bev Oda said. "They've come up with a national strategy for growth and poverty reduction and they are actually asking Canada for the first time to consider budgetary support to the government," Oda was quoted by

as saying. "We haven't done it in the past and of course part of the meetings is to see what kind of accountability and transparency in their processes they may be offering up for our consideration." Canada committed CAD555 million (USD374 million) for Haiti from 2006 to 2011.
