Increased US Aid Focus on Women in Haiti, Afghanistan Sought

Women play an indispensable role in rebuilding and promoting sustainable development in Afghanistan and Haiti, according to representatives of women’s organizations.

Suraya Pakzad, director of Voice of Women in Herat, Afghanistan, and Haiti country program director for UNIFEM Kathy Mangones said they plan to make an appeal to U.S. legislators to place women front and center of U.S. development efforts during the second annual International Women’s Day Breakfast March 4, according to a news release.

“Whether in Afghanistan and Haiti or elsewhere in the world, women are the best investment to build stronger families and communities and more stable economies,” said Ritu Sharma, co-founder and president of Women Thrive Worldwide.
