India says poverty eradication continues to be a major goal

Indian Finance Minister Palaniappan Chidambaram reminded the World Bank that the end of poverty is not imminent and that poverty reduction remains a major goal for the international development community. “Private financial flows often do not flow to the regions which are lagging or the people who are the poorest. Similarly, trust funds are often focused on particular areas and may not encompass the entire gamut of activities required for the poorest regions,” said the Finance Minister. He also urged all countries participating in the Doha round of negotiations to return to the table and resolve the remaining issues concerning the plight of poor farmers.
