The Islamic Development Bank has freed up USD50 million to begin the construction of a dam across the Niger river. The sum forms part of a USD236 million loan for the Kandaji project, which aims to “regenerate the ecosystem and save part of the Niger delta,” the country’s state television was quoted as saying. The dam is estimated to have a water-holding capacity of 1.6 billion cubic meters, enough to irrigate 222,000 hectares of land along the riverbank.
