The United Nations has confirmed= Monday (April 11) that Ivorian leader Laurent Gbagbo surrendered to forces allied to Alassane Ouattara, the United Nations-backed winner of November’s presidential polls.

“I can confirm that the former president and his wife are at the Golf Hotel. UNOCI (U.N. Operation in Côte d’Ivoire) has been requested to ensure their security,” Undersecretary-General for Peacekeeping Operations Alain Le Roy told reporters.

The Council of the European Union on Friday lifted its assets freeze on the ports of Abidjan and San Pedro, Ivorian Refining Company, and the Coffee and Cocoa Trade Management Committee to support the country’s recovery efforts.
