Japan assures Philippine aid increase

The Japan International Cooperation Agency President Dr. Sadako Ogata met with Philippine President Gloria Arroyo in Tokyo this week to reaffirm her organization’s promise to increase aid to the Philippines, particularly in helping secure peace and development in the southern region of Mindanao. “Dr. Ogata renewed a commitment to play an active role in the peace process principally through capacity-building and quick impact projects,” said Philippine Press Secretary Ignacio Bunye. Japan, the first non-Muslim country to monitor the implementation of the ceasefire agreement between rebels and government in Mindanao, will soon launch a study to evaluate the region’s development needs and determine the priority areas for the quick impact projects in education, health care, water supply and economic improvement.
