Incumbent President Nursultan Nazarbayev won reelection after securing 95.5 percent of votes cast in the country’s April 3 election. Nazarbayev’s victory was welcomed by some world leaders, including Chinese President Hu Jintao, but Europe’s main election monitoring group is sharply criticizing the conduct of the weekend election. The poll “revealed similar shortcomings as those noted in previous elections” in Kazakhstan, RFE/RL quotes a statement by the Organization for Security and Cooperation in Europe.
