Lebanon Accepts US Grant Despite Opposition

Despite objections by Hizbullah and some ministers of Free Patriotic Movement, the Lebanese Cabinet has accepted a grant from the U.S. Agency for International Development, Naharnet reports.

Several ministers have expressed reservations about the legal terms and conditions of the grant agreement.

A significant political force, Hizbullah is a Lebanon-based Shi’a Islamist political and paramilitary organization that provides social services to Lebanese Shiites. The U.S. classifies Hizbullah as a terrorist entity.

The USAID grant forms part of the U.S. commitment to Lebanon made at the Paris III donor conference in 2007.
