Liberia seeks debt relief

Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf appealed to donors, particularly the World Bank, International Monetary Fund and African Development Bank, to have the country?s debts written off. “Even though we have accomplished a lot, much more needs to be done,” Johnson-Sirleaf told reporters in Washington, where an international donor conference for Liberia is due to be held. She described the country?s debt burden worth $3.7 billion or about 3,000 percent of Liberia?s export earnings to be “clearly non-sustainable.” She said: “For us it means until the debt is settled, we cannot access significant sources of funding.” (Source: Liberian leader demands end to crushing debt/Agence France-Presse)
