Liberia welcomes debt relief decision by China

Liberia is pleased with the decision by China to forgive the African nation?s debt worth $15 million. “We commend you for the decision to cancel all debt owed by Liberia up to 2005, and we call on all other backers to do likewise, thereby enabling us to strengthen the provision of needed social services to our people,” Liberian President Ellen Johnson-Sirleaf said during a banquet dedicated to Chinese President Hu Jintao in Monrovia. “We will be making this call loud and clear at the partnership forum which will be held in Washington mid-February this year,” she continued. Hu also offered aid to finance various health and education projects in Liberia. (Source: Liberia urges donors to emulate China debt relief/Reuters)
