Mauritania’s armed forces intervened last month to overthrow the elected government because it had allowed the social, economic and security conditions to deteriorate so badly that it threatened the country’s foundations, the UN General Assembly heard Sept. 29. Abderrahim Ould Hadrami, Permanent Representative of Mauritania, delivered a statement to the Assembly’s annual General Debate on behalf of the new Government in which he said the situation inside his country had become so dire that the armed forces had no other option.
