Former Prime Minister Thein Sein is Myanmar’s new president, after being elected by the country’s parliament Feb. 4. The former army general is a known supporter of Senior Gen. Than Shwe, who has led Myanmar from 1992. Sein’s election is fueling fears that the military junta, which has ruled the country for almost 50 years, has no plans on relinquishing power, the Washington Post notes.
