Nigeria

Federal authorities will transfer USD 1.8 billion of oil savings to state governments within days to settle debts – a precursor to another withdrawal of about USD 4 billion, officials said. Economists say plans to disburse large portions of the oil savings account will fuel inflation. Meanwhile, Nigeria is launching a welfare scheme to help poor families, who will get monthly payments for one year on condition that they send their children to school and get them immunized against childhood illnesses. Also, a court of appeal in Nigeria has declared unconstitutional a law requiring every organizer of a rally to have a special police permit. (Reuters, BBC)
