Nigeria Lawmakers Push Sanctions For Sloppy Government Agencies with Sloppy Work on MDGs

Nigeria’s House of Representatives Committee on Millennium Development Goals said it will impose sanctions on ministries, department and agencies that fail to complete MDG projects, which are covered in 2010 national budget, This Day reports. Of Nigeria’s total budget for MDG projects this year, 14.6 billion nairas (USD96.97 million) is earmarked for education, 14.9 billion nairas for health, 2.13 billion nairas for women affairs, and 20 billion nairas for housing.

“Over the years, we had cases of MDG funds being returned to the Federation Account as unspent funds due to non-implementation of the budget at the end of each fiscal year. It is against this background that we consider it imperative to join hands with the Executive to arrest this ugly trend,” Chairman of the House Committee on MDG Saudatu Sani said.
