Northern Ireland

Peter Robinson is succeeding veteran Protestant politician Ian Paisley as leader of Northern Ireland’s DUP. Robinson currently serves as finance minister in the Northern Ireland Assembly. Paisley, 81, is bowing out of politics next month. He was the face of the loyalist movement throughout the years of confrontation with parties representing Northern Ireland’s Catholics. Paisley surprised friend and foe when he joined a power-sharing administration with his arch-enemy Martin McGuinness, chairman of the Republican Sinn Fein party. Since the development, Northern Ireland has enjoyed a period of stability. (Radio Netherlands)
