Norway has earmarked USD 1 billion for the conservation of the Amazonian rain forest in the period until 2015. The money will be deposited in the Amazon Fund, created earlier this year by the Brazilian government. Norway is the first country to make a contribution to the fund. Oslo has announced it wants to make a first deposit of USD 130 million next year, provided Brazil can prove that deforestation was reduced in the previous year. The Brazilian government hopes for a total of USD 21 billion in contributions to its international fund for the conservation of the rainforest. (Radio Netherlands)
