The European Commission is strengthening bilateral relations with the Palestinian Authority by opening up export markets. Commissioner Karel De Gucht plans to grant “duty-free quota-free access for Palestinian exports to the EU.” The EC will also build the capacity of the Palestinian Authority in trade liberalization.

The United Nations released a report revealing that the economic situation in the occupied Palestinian territory has improved but remains unstable especially in the Gaza Strip as the Israeli blockade continues to undermine prospects for employment and growth. International Labor Organization Director-General Juan Somavia proposed the creation of an independent, democratic and viable Palestinian State as the lasting solution to the conflict.
