At least seven gunmen were killed when soldiers attacked an armed group occupying a tiny island in the western Philippines on Aug. 19, the military said. Two gunmen were also captured after Marines stormed a school that the group used as a base on Marabon, off the larger island of Palawan, when they refused to surrender, it said. About 30 armed men, saying they were members of a former Muslim rebel group, occupied the island on Aug. 15, forcing many residents to flee. The men said they were members of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), once the Philippines' largest Muslim separatist group. (AFP)
