Relief groups wait for the go-ahead in Basra

Aid groups are all set to to carry out relief efforts in Iraq’s Basra city, an area suffering from weeks of escalating military exchanges. The United Nations Children’s Fund and other international organizations are just awaiting instructions before distributing supplies to around 8,000 affected families. “Hospitals in Basra and in parts of Baghdad are running out of medical stocks, food and fuel,” an International Committee of the Red Cross aid worker said, adding that the city’s unstable security situation prevents aid workers from embarking on relief operations.
