Romania to Expedite EU Aid Spending

The Romanian government said it plans to speed up disbursement of some 19.7 billion euros (USD26 billion) in aid from the European Union. With only 690 million euros so far released from the 2007-2013 funding, Romania is expediting the disbursement of EU funding by simplifying the application and approval procedures, according to counsellor Catalin Vatafu. The country expects to disburse some 1.3 billion euros in EU aid this year.

The prompt use of EU funding has been primarily obstructed by losing bidders who contest their cases in Romanian courts, Minister of Regional Development and Tourism Elena Udrea told The Diplomat.
