Russia on Dec. 5 ignored an order from the European Court of Human Rights and extradited an Uzbek man to his country who could face a long jail term and even torture, rights activists said. Abdugani Kamaliyev, 49, was arrested in the western Siberian town of Tyumen on Nov. 23 and deported to Uzbekistan early on Dec. 5, said Yelena Ryabinina, an activist at the Civic Assistance Committee, which helps refugees. The Strasbourg-based European Court of Human Rights had sent the local Russian police and prosecutors a decision that ordered them not to extradite Kamaliyev before a court hearing. (Reuters)
