Serbia may have to wait beyond 2012 to obtain its European Union candidacy status, Vincent Degert, head of the EU delegation to Serbia, told the Belgrade daily Blic in an interview published Saturday (March 19).

“This is one of the three possible scenarios, but it should not be excluded. Everything is now in Serbia’s hands… We are limited with time, it is already mid-March,” he said.

Serbia secured support for its bid to join the bloc after agreeing in September to start a dialogue with Kosovo. Serbia applied for EU membership in December 2009, Agence France-Presse reports.

Meantime, some 7,000 anti-government protesters gathered in Cacak, Serbia, on Saturday (March 19) to demand early elections, The Associated Press reports. A major demonstration will be held on April 16 in Belgrade, according to the organizers of the protests.
