The humanitarian crisis in Somalia has deteriorated to a point where nearly half of the Horn of Africa nation's population requires assistance, a senior United Nations aid official warned Dec. 1, calling on donors to urgently fund an appeal for more than USD 900 million for relief operations. Speaking in Nairobi, Kenya, at the launch of the 2009 Humanitarian Appeal for Somalia, UN Humanitarian and Resident Coordinator for Somalia, Mark Bowden, said that throughout this year humanitarian operations have struggled to address the widening crisis and support the growing number of vulnerable people in the country.
