The government has adopted a new decree that seeks to strengthen the country’s capacity to respond and contain the effects of natural disasters, particularly the recent torrential rains in April and May. The U.N. has donated more than USD588,000 worth of humanitarian assistance for the storm-affected areas, including Kulob in the province of Khatlon, following Tajikistan’s formal disaster declaration on May 11. On the health sector, the World Health Organization said it completed the first round of its polio vaccination campaign on May 8, while the second phase is currently under way until May 22. A third round will be initiated on June 1, WHO said, according to IRIN.
