The United Nations seeks $246 million in aid to avert a worsening Palestinian crisis brought about by escalating violence and economic sanctions. Filippo Grandi, the U.N. Relief and Works Agency deputy commissioner-general, told reporters in Jordan that the economic sanctions have had “an unbearable effect on the most vulnerable ? the sick, the old, the poor, and the children.” Donor agencies imposed an aid ban on the Palestinian government since the Hamas election victory in January and called for the recognition of Israel and commitment to peace as conditions for resuming aid. Grandi said the funds would be used to provide food aid to 1.4 million Palestinians, emergency cash assistance for 600,000 poor people and to generate 25,000 to 30,000 short-term emergency jobs per month for unemployed refugees.
