Uganda labors at proposal to get Global Fund backing

The Ugandan government is hoping to beat the July 1 deadline set for proposals by the Global Fund to Fight AIDS, Tuberculosis and Malaria, with which the country has had some trouble over accountability issues. If Uganda successfully gets its proposal through, however, it has a chance to benefit from millions of dollars that the Global Fund has set aside under its own Round 8 program. The agency is reportedly devoting at least USD2 billion to beneficiary states. “The process of preparing our proposal is in high gear and meetings are already in progress with all our partners,” said Dr. Francis Runumi, commissioner for planning in Uganda’s ministry of health. “We have been bitten once in the past so we want to ensure that we take as much care as possible,” he added.
