UK lawmakers want better focus on poverty

Senior members of the British parliament have emphasized that the World Bank should not veer away from its primary aim of reducing poverty worldwide. According to the international development committee, the U.K.’s doubled contribution makes it imperative for the international finance institution to use the funds wisely. “As a major contributor to the World Bank, the UK is well-placed to ensure the bank assesses the impact on development of all of its lending in a more systematic and rigorous way than at present,” said Committee chairman Malcolm Bruce. “This would safeguard against bad spending decisions and would mean that the end result of the bank’s activity is always linked to poverty and development.” (Source: MPs demand international poverty focus/ePolitix)
