UK Minister Stands By Massive Aid to India

Despite contentions of critics that India is among the fastest-rising economic powers in the world, the British government will push through with the provision of some GBP825 million (USD1.2 billion) to help alleviate poverty in the Asian nation over the next three years. “There are more poor people in India than the whole of Africa … if you are serious as a global community about [meeting the millennium development goals] then you have to do something about the level of chronic poverty in India,” U.K. Development Minister Douglas Alexander said during his visit to India’s poorest state, Bihar.
