Britain committed USD5.9 million for Afghanistan in response to a joint appeal made by the United Nations and the Afghan government to help reduce malnutrition among pregnant and breastfeeding women. “Afghanistan is one of the poorest countries in the world, and least able to cope with spiraling food prices combined with severe winter weather. Providing an immediate safety net will help avoid a humanitarian crisis and end the immediate suffering,” remarked International Development Secretary Douglas Alexander. The sum comes on top of the USD908 million pledged by British prime minister Gordon Brown to support development efforts in the country from 2009 to 2012.
