The United Nations needs $309 million aid next year to cover shortages of food, drinking water, medicine and treat sexual abuse for 16 West African countries. “We have the power to decide who will escape the cycle of death by hunger, disease or malnutrition,” Ahmedou Ould Abdallah, UN Representative for West Africa, said at the launch of the annual appeal in the Senegalese capital Dakar, adding that “any support we provide is support for life.” West Africa is one of the poorest regions with some 300,000 children under five years old dying every year from malnutrition and suffering from the worst droughts. Conflicts in the Ivory Coast further complicate delivery of basic services.
