UN Helps Prosecute Somali Pirates

A United Nations trust fund is supporting five projects worth USD2.1 million aimed at prosecuting piracy suspects off the Somalia coast. Of the projects backed by the Trust Fund to Support Initiatives of States Countering Piracy off the Coast of Somalia, four will help bolster the capacity of institutions in Seychelles and autonomous Somali regions of Puntland and Somaliland in mentoring prosecutors and police, building and renovating prisons, and reviewing domestic laws, as well as building the capacity of local courts. The fifth project aims to assist the local media in disseminating anti-piracy messages within Somalia.
