UN launches $60M appeal for Iraqi refugees

The United Nations refugee agency or the UNHCR is seeking $60 million to fund relief efforts for displaced Iraqis, whose number rises by an average of 40,000 to 50,000 per month. “Unremitting violence in Iraq will likely mean continued mass internal and external displacement affecting much of the surrounding region,” the agency stated. The refugee crisis, according to UNHCR, is the most severe in the Middle East. “The current exodus is the largest long-term population movement in the Middle East since the displacement of Palestinians following the creation of Israel in 1948,” the agency added.
