UN plans appeal for Lebanon

The United Nations looks to launch an appeal to help victims of the ongoing conflict between Israel and Lebanese Hezbollah militants. “It’s heartbreaking to see all that hard work that the Lebanese, their UN partners, nongovernmental partners and neighbours in the region, and others, did in Lebanon seems now to be lost because of the destruction,” Jan Egeland, the U.N. Coordinator for Humanitarian Affairs, said. “We’re working hard now on assessing lifesaving, humanitarian needs in Lebanon,” he added. Egeland did not state how much the U.N. would seek and only said that “it’s the kind of money that countries should be able to take from their reserves, just like the world was able to fund the multibillion dollar tsunami effort last year.” (Source: UN poised to launch Lebanon aid appeal/Agence France-Presse)
