UN Population Fund Hopes for New US Funding

The United Nations Population Fund is hoping that the U.S. will shoulder at least 10 percent of the agency's budget after U.S. President Barack Obama reinstated funding for overseas family planning organizations,

reported. Former U.S. President George W. Bush froze funding for the U.N. agency in 2002 following allegations that UNFPA supported China's one-child policy, which backed enforced abortions. UNFPA Executive Director Thoraya Obaid said the U.S. Congress is discussing a proposed annual budget of USD40 million to USD60 million for the agency.
