Ghana is host to a food store that the United Nations established to serve West Africa after floods destroyed the region’s major infrastructure. “For USD1 we spend on relief items it costs us between USD0.5 and USD1 in terms of air shipment,” said Herve Ludovic de Lys, who heads the U.N. humanitarian office in West Africa. The agency is also pushing for the creation of a regional fund for disaster prevention and mitigation, de Lys added.
