UN warns of Sri Lanka aid suspension

The United Nations threatens to cease its aid operations in Sri Lanka over the murder of 17 aid workers of French charity Action Against Hunger early this month. U.N. ceasefire monitors believed the Sri Lankan government is responsible for the crime, an accusation vehemently denied by the latter. “I say we cannot continue in this area unless people will be held accountable for the execution of 17 of our colleagues,” U.N. emergency relief coordinator Jan Egeland said. Egeland also noted that the humanitarian crisis in Sri Lanka has worsened, increasing the number of displaced people by 220,000. (Sources: U.N.
