US Secretary of State Hillary Clinton told reporters that the country has "a lot of damage to repair" to its standing in the world after eight years of George W. Bush in the White House. Secretary of State Clinton said, "there is a great exhalation of breath going on around the world's people express their appreciation for the new direction that is being set." In his first formal television interview since his inauguration, President Barack Obama told the Dubai-based satellite channel Al Arabiya that Washington was prepared to extend a hand of peace to Iran if it "unclenched its fist." Obama also said the time was right for Israel and the Palestinians to resume peace negotiations, saying he was willing to listen to both parties without prejudice. (Radio Netherlands)
