The U.S. will freeze an estimated USD60 million in grants to Nicaragua following allegations of local election fraud. “We had hoped, for the sake of the Nicaraguan people, that the government would continue the country’s trend toward peaceful, democratic and credible elections,” said Millennium Challenge Corp. Chief Executive John Danilovich. “I’m afraid recent evidence shows that this is not the case.” The aid agency considers political freedom, among others, as a prerequisite for funding eligibility.
