US group to assess Ethiopian humanitarian needs

A U.S. mission is set to arrive in Ethiopia’s Ogaden region to survey the country’s humanitarian needs. “The U.S. government Humanitarian Assistance Team is in Ethiopia to examine health, nutrition, food security, and water and sanitation conditions and livelihood issues in the Somali region in order to provide an impartial assessment of the current humanitarian situation and facilitate appropriate response efforts,” stated the U.S. embassy. The Bush administration channels a significant amount of aid to Ethiopia per year, and considers the country as a valuable ally in the “war on terror.”
