US lawmakers back Bush?s campaign against pandemics

The U.S. House of Representatives, whose leadership is held by Democrats, has approved $4.5 billion to fund President George W. Bush?s initiative to combat AIDS, malaria and tuberculosis in poor nations. The money constitutes an increase of $500 million from Bush?s request and tops previous allocation by more than $1 billion. The U.S. Senate, whose control is also in the hands of Democrats, is expected to vote on the bill early next week.
