US Offers Massive Reconstruction Aid to Georgia

The U.S. committed USD1 billion in aid to help rehabilitate Georgia’s economy and infrastructure following the country’s recent armed conflict with Russia. The multi-year aid package “will begin now under President Bush and we believe strongly will endure in the next U.S. administration,” said Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice, who launched the initiative. No military assistance has been considered yet, according to U.S. officials. (“U.S. plans to give Georgia USD1 billion in aid” - Thomson Reuters, Sept. 3, 2008)
