The U.S. offered $30 million to help Lebanese affected by the hostilities between Israel and Hezbollah. Secretary of State Condoleezza Rice visited Beirut, where she met with Lebanese Prime Minister Fuad Siniora and other senior government officials. “We knew this when we came in, but the immediacy of being in Beirut makes it very, very clear, there are some serious humanitarian problems,” Assistant Secretary of State David Welch, who accompanied Rice, said. The money is Washington’s contribution to the United Nations appeal worth $150 million to provide relief to 800,000 homeless Lebanese.
