US sends USD138 million to UN refugee agency

The U.S. announced that it will provide fresh funding worth USD138 million to support the 2008 operations of the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees. “This contribution is in addition to previously announced U.S. contributions totaling USD95.4 million for UNHCR’s Iraq programs and another nearly USD10 million provided to support the organization’s refugee resettlement efforts,” the U.S. Department of State was quoted as saying. “This latest contribution brings the United States’ support to UNHCR to more than USD240 million for 2008.” The latest contribution will help the UNHCR bring protection and assistance to refugees from Sudan, Chad, the Democratic Republic of the Congo, Kenya, and Somalia, among others.
