USAID chief supports more effective Afghan aid

At an international donor conference in Kabul, U.S. Agency for International Development Administrator Henrietta H. Fore called for a “more effective, better coordinated” donor assitance towards Afghanistan. “Over the past six years, the United States has learned many lessons and taken steps to improve our effectiveness. Let us heed the Afghan Government’s call to strengthen the Afghan Government and its human and financial capacity and make our assistance more effective,” she remarked. On the part of the U.S., Fore said the government aims “to increase Afghan ownership, leadership, and visibility; buy more products locally and regionally; maximize the use of multilateral mechanisms such as the Afghanistan Reconstruction Trust Fund; and direct more assistance through Government.” Aside from attending the said forum – a precursor to the June 12, 2008 Paris Support Conference – Fore is in Afghanistan to tour project sites around the country.
