WFP: N.Korean project suffers funding shortage

The World Food Program only secured $18.6 million or about 18 percent of the required funding worth $102 million for a project in North Korea that begun in June last year. “We have had much stronger backing from donors previously. This is quite a lot lower than usual,” said Jean-Pierre de Margerie, the WFP’s country representative for North Korea. He conceded that, at the moment, ?the political situation in North Korea is not conducive to funding projects.? According to De Margerie, Germany, Russia, Ireland, Cuba, and Denmark provided the largest donations to the project, which distributes food to 700,000 needy North Koreans. (Source: WFP says N.
