UNAIDS

Winnie Byanyima is the new executive director of the Joint United Nations Programme on HIV/AIDS, or UNAIDS.

Byanyima's appointment was welcomed by many in the aid community, particularly advocates who have been calling for more women leaders in the sector. Byanyima was the only female candidate on the shortlist, which had also included Chris Beyrer, Salim Abdool Karim, Bernard Haufiku, and Sani Aliyu.
